The Art of Genes

The Art of Genes

ISBN: 0198503431
Title: The Art of Genes
Author: Enrico Coen
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
Publication Date: 1999-07-15
Number Of Pages: 386

Book Description:

How is a tiny fertilised egg able to turn itself into a human being? How can an acorn transform itself into an oak tree? Through a highly original synthesis of science and art, this book vividly describes the recent revolution in our understanding of how plants and animals develop. Drawing on a wide range of material — from flowers growing petals instead of sex organs, and flies that develop an extra pair of wings, to works by Leonardo and Magritte — it explains the language and meaning of genes, in an entertaining way that is both accurate and accessible to the general reader. It shows how an organism develops through an interactive dialogue in which there is no clear separation between plan and execution, much as an artist might paint a picture. By explaining how this process has arisen, the book arrives at fresh and exciting insights into the nature of evolution, development and human creativity.

A groundbreaking new way of looking at one of the last great mysteries of biology
Written by an author at the cutting edge of current research
The first broadly accessible synthesis of modern ideas in development, that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. A fundamentally new approach to looking at development and its relation to evolution and human creativity
A fresh synthesis of key ideas in science, art and philosophy
An integrated account of plant and animal biology.

Streptomyces in Nature and Medicine: The Antibiotic Makers

Streptomyces in Nature and Medicine: The Antibiotic Makers
by David A. Hopwood (Author)

Product Details:
* Hardcover: 260 pages
* Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA; 1 edition (January 8, 2007)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 019515066X

Book Description
This is an insiders account of 50 years of genetic studies of the soil-inhabiting microbes that produce most of the antibiotics used to treat infections, as well as anti-cancer, anti-parasitic and immunosuppressant drugs. The book begins by describing how these microbes the actinomycetes were discovered in the latter part of the nineteenth century, but remained a Cinderella group until, in the 1940s, they shot to prominence with the discovery of streptomycin, the first effective treatment for tuberculosis and only the second antibiotic, after penicillin, to become a medical marvel. There followed a massive effort over several decades to find further treatments for infectious diseases and cancer, tempered by the rise of antibiotic resistance consequent on antibiotic misuse and over-use. The book goes on to describe the discovery of gene exchange in the actinomycetes in the context of the rise of microbial genetics in the mid-20th century, leading to determination of the complete DNA sequence of a model member of the group at the turn of the millennium. There follow chapters in which the intricate molecular machinery that adapts the organisms metabolism and development to life in the soil, including antibiotic production, is illuminated by the DNA blueprint. Then come an up-to-the minute account of the use of genetic engineering to make novel, hybrid, antibiotics, and a topical description of techniques to learn the roles of the thousands of genes in a genome sequence, throwing a powerful light on the biology of the organisms and their harnessing for increasing antibiotic productivity. In the final chapter we return to the mycobacteria that cause tuberculosis and leprosy, the first actinomycetes to be discovered, and how methodology, in part derived from the study of the streptomycetes, is being applied to understand and control these still deadly pathogens.

Restriction Endonucleases

Restriction Endonucleases (Nucleic Acids and Molecular Biology)
by Alfred M. Pingoud (Editor)

Product Details:
* Hardcover: 443 pages
* Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (December 16, 2004)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 3540205020

Book Description:
Restriction enzymes are highly specific nucleases which occur ubiquitously among prokaryotic organisms, where they serve to protect bacterial cells against foreign DNA. Many different types of restriction enzymes are known, among them multi-subunit enzymes which depend on ATP or GTP hydrolysis for target site location. The best known representatives, the orthodox type II restriction endonucleases, are homodimers which recognize palindromic sequences, 4 to 8 base pairs in length, and cleave the DNA within or immediately adjacent to the recognition site. In addition to their important biological role (up to 10 % of the genomes of prokaryotic organisms code for restriction/modification systems!), they are among the most important enzymes used for the analysis and recombination of DNA. In addition, they are model systems for the study of protein-nucleic acids interactions and, because of their ubiquitous occurence, also for the understanding of the mechanisms of evolution.

Molecular Basis of Human Nutrition (2003)

This book is aimed at first or second year undergraduates, or taught master’s students, who are studying nutrition as part of a degree in molecular life sciences, health sciences or medicine, including single honours nutrition students. It is intended to supplement the larger nutrition textbooks with greater emphasis on the molecular and metabolic basis of nutrition. It focuses on the biochemical functions of the essential nutrients and the physiological consequences of deficient and excessive intakes. These are described within the context of normal human diets and the requirements for health. Consideration is also given to the other biologically active materials within foods, and to the role of diet in multifactorial diseases. The book focuses on human nutrition, although there areinstances where comparisons with, or examples from, the nutrition of other mammalian species will be mentioned to help in the understanding of basic nutritional principles. It is assumed that readers will have studied, or will be studying concurrently, first year undergraduate modules in general biochemistry and mammalian physiology. The book is based on our experience of many years of research and teaching in nutrition.

Microscopic images transmitted by mobile cameraphone

Microscopic images transmitted by mobile cameraphone

hi all, i found this article intresting. do write your comments.

Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (2007) 101, 1053—1055.

A novel application of mobile cameraphone technology is the capture and transmission of images directly from the eyepiece of an ordinary laboratory microscope. The only equipment required is a spacer that allows the mobile phone camera to be held steady at the correct distance from, and parallel to, the microscope eyepiece lens. I used a plastic bottle cap, 35mm in diameter and 13mm deep, with an aperture about the diameter of the eyepiece lens (20mm) cut out of it. When the microscopic field to be captured is in focus, the spacer, cupped against the microscope eyepiece, is sandwiched between the camera and the eyepiece. By viewing the phone display and carefully adjusting the camera position, the image is centred, refocused if necessary, and captured. It can then be transmitted directly to another mobile phone or, ideally, to a computer, where it can be enlarged and enhanced, for expert opinion and permanent record. The resolution and colour reproduction of the image is limited by the camera’s quality. I used a basic mobile phone camera with a resolution of 640×480 pixels. This is sufficient to transmit images of objects of moderate size, such as a malaria gametocyte, or trypanosomes on a Giemsa-stained blood film, but not very small or subtle microscopic detail. However, mobile cameraphones are becoming ever cheaper and more sophisticated, with high resolution, zoom lenses, autofocus and video capture commonplace. The ubiquity of mobile phone networks will allow application of this simple technique in many situations where the dedicated and expensive microscope, camera, software, and computer network required for conventional telemedicine do not exist; for example, in rural diagnostic laboratories in developing countries.

by Cedric Mims (Author), Hazel Dockrell (Author), Richard Goering (Author), Ivan Roitt (Author), Derek Wakelin (Author), Mark Zuckerman (Author)

Product Details:
* Paperback: 660 pages
* Publisher: Mosby; 3 edition (November 18, 2004)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0323035752

Book Description
Medical Microbiology has been improved and updated to keep it at the forefront of microbiological teaching practice. The clinically relevant, systems-based approach has been retained so as to emphasise the microbiology of the agents causing disease and the diseases affecting individual organ systems.
Over 250 color diagrams explain difficult concepts while color clinical photographs appear alongside the microbiology, stressing the clinical relevance of the science.
This book opens with an expanded basic introduction to viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites. Then the immunology of the host is considered (again in more detail than in previous editions) before looking at the complex conflicts between host and invading agent. The clinical manifestations of these conflicts are explored within a systems-based context before concluding with a re-organised survey of microbiological diagnosis and control.
Throughout, attractive design features are used to highlight core information and make study and review that bit easier: Chapter Introductions, Key Facts Boxes, case-based Review Questions, new Microbiology Lessons and Summary Headings throughout make Medical Microbiology a pleasure to read.

Book Description
This book is a guide for planners and programme managers in the health and education sectors who are charged with implementing community-based programmes for control of soil-transmitted helminth and schistosome infections in school-age children.
Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminth cause more than 150 000 deaths each year. In school-age populations in developing countries, intestinal helminth infections rank first among the causes of all communicable and noncommunicable diseases. This book describes an approach to the control of infections that is based on the periodic treatment of school-age children – a particularly high-risk group. Parasitological surveys of school population samples, allied to treatment programmes, can then be used as a basis for selecting an appropriate control strategy for the whole community.

Product Details:
* Hardcover: 94 pages
* Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (April 25, 2006)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0387322302

Book Description
Since its discovery in 1979, HDV has occupied a unique position in virus taxonomy. It does not belong to any of the estabhshed viral family but constitutes its own genus, deltavirus, whereas it does have significant similarity to viroids, subviral agents of higher plants. HDV RNA genome is smaller than any known animal virus genome, so small that it encodes only a single protein. Therefore, its propagation is largely dependent on factors supplied by host and another virus, hepatitis B virus (HBV). For example, HDV makes use of HBV s surface antigens for envelope proteins. HDV replicates through RNA-dependent RNA synthesis by cellular DNA-dependent
RNA polymerase(s). RNA editing by cellular enzyme(s) and RNA cleavage by viral ribozymes are also involved in the viral life cycle. From a medical point of view, patients infected with both HBV and HDV tend to develop more severe clinical symptoms than those infected with HBV alone. All these features make HDV unique and attractive, and its research over the last two decades has resulted in a number of findings that have wide implications beyond the immediate subject.

Product Details:
* Hardcover: 335 pages
* Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (July 2007)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 354071328X

Book Description
Over the last half of century interferon (IFN), originally discovered as an antiviral protein, has developed from an inhibitor of viral replication to a major force in the antiviral response. Initially studied only by few virologists, IFN was generally considered as a poorly defined protein of limited importance. The development of molecular techniques lead to the identification of a family of IFN genes and has shown an unexpected complexity of type I IFN genes and their expression. Presently, some aspects of the of the pathogen mediated induction of IFN gene expression are understood at molecular level, while others are still at the stage of description. Both Toll like receptors and cytoplasmic RNA helicases were shown to recognize viral nucleic acids and the basis of a distinct recognition of viral nucleic acids from the cellular ones are emerging. Important insights on the virus recognition entity, leading to the expression of interferon and interferon induced genes, have been made in the recent year, which are challenging the accepted concept of the critical role of dsRNA in IFN induction. The availability of genetically modified mice that are lacking either essential components of the interferon inducing pathway, or interferon signaling pathway fully confirmed the original idea, made soon after its discovery, that interferon is the first cellular defense against viral infection.

Product Details:
* Hardcover: 312 pages
* Publisher: CRC; 1 edition (November 2, 2006)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0849327091

Book Description
As little as two decades ago, deliberately injecting botulinum toxin into patients would have seemed foolhardy at best and criminal at worst. The increased clinical use of botulinum toxins has expanded the body of knowledge available on the structure and function of these proteins. This knowledge can be applied to topics as varied as therapies based on the endopeptidase activity of the toxins, vaccine development, protection against botulism, and vectors for neuronal drug delivery. Based on recent scientific and clinical information from top international authorities, Treatments from Toxins: The Therapeutic Potential of Clostridial Neurotoxins reviews the status of current research and development and identifies significant developments. Drawing on their vast experience in this field, the editors present the basic background of the bacteriology and genetics of the neurotoxigenic clostridia, a history of the discovery of the neurotoxins, and an overview of the tetanus and botulism diseases. The chapters detailing common medical applications of the toxins cover side effects and novel uses, including neuronal drug delivery strategies, and provide a fresh look at what can still be achieved. They also explore the toxins as potential threat agents and the advent of the therapeutic use of botulinum toxins. Highlighting the pitfalls, successes, and challenges that exist when engineering complex proteins, the book brings together the clinical and theoretical worlds. It presents a broad overview of the current status of botulinum research and its clinical applications.

Cholera, Chloroform and the Science of Medicine: A Life of John Snow

Product Details:
* Hardcover: 454 pages
* Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA (April 23, 2003)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 019513544X

Book Description:

The product of six years of collaborative research, this fine biography offers new interpretations of a pioneering figure in anesthesiology, epidemiology, medical cartography, and public health. It modifies the conventional rags to riches portrait of John Snow by synthesizing fresh information about his early life from archival research and recent studies. It explores the intellectual roots of his commitments to vegetarianism, temperance, and pure drinking water, first developed when he was a medical apprentice and assistant in the north of England. The authors argue that all of Snow's later contributions are traceable to the medical paradigm he imbibed as a medical student in London and put into practice early in his career as a clinician: that medicine as a science required the incorporation of recent developments in its collateral sciences--chiefly anatomy, chemistry, and physiology--in order to understand the causes of disease. Snow's theoretical breakthroughs in anesthesia were extensions of his experimental research in respiratory physiology and the properties of inhaled gases. Shortly thereafter, his understanding of gas laws led him to reject miasmatic explanations for the spread of cholera, and to develop an alternative theory in consonance with what was then known about chemistry and the physiology of digestion. Using all of Snow's writings, the authors follow him when working in his home laboratory, visiting patients throughout London, attending medical society meetings, and conducting studies during the cholera epidemics of 1849 and 1854. The result is a book that demythologizes some overly heroic views of Snow by providing a fairer measure of his actual contributions. It will have an impact not only on the understanding of the man but also on the history of epidemiology and medical science.
