Product Details
* Hardcover: 680 pages
* Publisher: Elsevier Science; 2 edition (April 1, 2003)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0444510842

Description
This is a completely revised edition, including new material, from 'Culture Media for Food Microbiology' by J.E.L. Corry et al., published in Progress in Industrial Microbiology, Volume 34, Second Impression 1999.Written by the Working Party on Culture Media, of the International Committee on Food Microbiology and Hygiene, this is a handy reference for microbiologists wanting to know which media to use for the detection of various groups of microbes in food, and how to check their performance.
The first part comprises reviews, written by international experts, of the media designed to isolate the major groups of microbes important in food spoilage, food fermentations or food-borne disease. The history and rationale of the selective agents, and the indicator systems are considered, as well as the relative merits of the various media. The second part contains monographs on approximately 90 of the most useful media.
The first edition of this book has been frequently quoted in standard methods, especially those published by the International Standards Organisation (ISO) and the European Standards Organisation (CEN), as well as in the manuals of companies manufacturing microbiological media. In this second edition, almost all of the reviews have been completely rewritten, and the remainder revised. Approximately twelve monographs have been added and a few deleted. This book will be useful to anyone working in laboratories examining food - industrial, contract, medical, academic or public analyst, as well as other microbiologists, working in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and clinical (medical and veterinary) areas - particularly with respect to quality assurance of media and methods in relation to laboratory accreditation.

Nucleic Acids in Innate Immunity

Nucleic Acids in Innate Immunity
By Ken J. Ishii, Shizuo Akira

Product Details
* Hardcover: 304 pages
* Publisher: CRC (May 22, 2008)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 1420068253

Book Description
Until recently, innate immunity was regarded as a relatively nonspecific system designed to engulf and destroy pathogens. However, new studies show that the innate immune system is highly developed in its ability to discriminate between self and foreign entities. Understanding this mechanism can lead to therapeutic strategies based on manipulation of this previously unexploited branch of the immune system. Drawing on the research of leading experts, Nucleic Acids in Innate Immunity provides insight in this new area of immunology. The book begins by explaining the roles of nucleic acids in immunity, describing the mechanism of discrimination based on pattern-recognition receptors (PRRs), including Toll-like receptors (TLRs), Nod-like receptors (NLR), and RIG-I-like receptors (RLR). Chapters discuss how these PRRs recognize and respond to pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) by activating specific signaling pathways.
The second section focuses on the therapeutic applicationsof immunomodulatory DNA by manipulating released pathogenic nucleic acids as immune system stimulants. The book introduces novel therapeutics developed to prevent or treat infectious diseases, allergic disorders, and cancer, as well as clearing unnecessary or abnormal host molecules.
The final section addresses how the immune system discriminates self and non-self RNA. Recent findings that host (self) nucleic acids are not inert in the immune system beg the question of exactly what elements within DNA or RNA are recognized by the innate immune system. Contributions review recent advances to understand innate immune recognition of nucleic acids and describe the resulting immune modulation. Providing a comprehensive review of nucleic acid recognition and regulation by the innate immune system, this seminal work reveals new directions for future research in immune modulation.

Malaria: Genetic and Evolutionary Aspects

Malaria: Genetic and Evolutionary Aspects (Emerging Infectious Diseases of the 21st Century)
By Krishna R. Dronamraju, Paolo Arese

Product Details
* Hardcover: 190 pages
* Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (December 14, 2005)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0387282947

Book Description
This book is an edited collection of papers by leading experts on the population genetics and evolutionary biology of malaria, a disease which results in three million deaths each year in the world. "Malaria Hypothesis" refers to the hypothesis, which was proposed by J.B.S. Haldane at the 8th International Congress of Genetics in Stockholm in 1948, that the identical eographic distribution of both falciparum malaria and thalassemia in the mediterranean region suggests that the heterozygous individuals for thalassemia (or microcythemia as it was called then) might have greater resistance to malarial infection. Haldane, later in the same year, expanded his theory to infectious disease in general at another international conference, at Pallanza in Italy. Haldane's hypothesis was subsequently confirmed in the African populations by A.C. Allison and later by others during the last fifty years, although at first for sickle cell anemia and later for thalassemia with varying degrees of success. The malaria hypothesis still remains today a unique example of that kind of balanced polymorphism, not only in genetics but in all of biology. It opened up new insights into our perspective of the genetics and population dynamics of disease prevalence, particularly infectious disease.

* Hardcover: 264 pages
* Publisher: CRC; 1 edition (November 29, 2000)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0849322073

BooK Description
Viral Pathogenesis in Diagrams is the first book of its kind to illustrate viral pathogenesis on a comparative basis. The text covers the pathogenesis of viral diseases, including vertebrates, invertebrates, plants, and protists. The diagrams summarize and integrate large numbers of observations, from electron microscopy to clinical data, into a single picture or a few related drawings. Organized alphabetically by virus family or groups, this book covers the complete domain of virology. Transcending photographs and experimental data, the diagrams are ideally suited to illustrate the pathogenesis of viral diseases, from infection to host defenses and cell death. Included are two chapters describing general pathogenesis in vertebrate virus infections and illustrating the spread of viruses through the body, as well as cytopathology and host defenses. One chapter illustrates the pathogenic behavior of 19 vertebrate virus families, especially herpesviruses and retroviruses. The 268 diagrams in Viral Pathogenesis in Diagrams were selected from over 800 diagrams of English and French virological literature, including one derived from a famous drawing by Leonardo da Vinci. This up-to-date reference will promote understanding and future research.

Book Description
The discovery of IgE and its association with mast cell histamine release provided the initial understanding of the role of mast cells in asthma and acute allergic reactions. However, mast cells are now recognized as tissue-dwelling effector cells that play multiple roles not only in immediate-type allergic reaction but also in innate immunity, inflammation, angiogenesis, and tissue remodeling. Mast cells produce a variety of lipid mediators, chemokines, cytokines, and enzymes that may interact with inflammatory tissues such as asthmatic lungs. This book focuses on the roles of mast cell products in allergic diseases and discusses strategies to regulate mast cell functions without perturbing their physiological roles. It also aims at understanding mast cells at the system level by creating a detailed model of cell regulation which is expected to lead to highly mast cell-specific, i.e. efficient and safe, drug targets. Mycotoxins in Fruits and Vegetables
By R. Barkai-Golan, Nachman Paster

Product Details
* Hardcover: 408 pages
* Publisher: Academic Press; 1 edition (April 4, 2008)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0123741262

Book Description
Mycotoxins are toxins produced by aerobic, microscopic fungus under special conditions of moisture and temperature. They colonize in a variety of foods from harvest to the grocer. Mycotoxins have gained world wide interest in recent years with the revelation of the effect of these toxins on health. A current example is the presence of ochratoxin A, a human carcinogen and nephrotoxin, in wines. The increased concern about fruit safety has led to increased studies throughout the world and enhanced awareness for stringent regulations governing mycotoxin limits in food.
Presented in three defined sections, this is the first book to provide comprehensive analysis of the main mycotoxins contaminating fruits and vegetables and their derived products. The first section provides a safety evaluation of mycotoxins in fruits and vegetables, details regarding factors affecting mycotoxin production and diffusion in the fruit tissue, and recent methods for detection of mycotoxigenic fungi and mycotoxins produced by the fungi. The second part takes a critical look at the main individual mycotoxins and the third section focuses on approaches for prevention and control.

Product Details
* Hardcover: 384 pages
* Publisher: CRC; 1 edition (December 17, 2002)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 1566769124

Book Description
The first book to address the subject, Microbial Stress Adaptation and Food Safety emphasizes the implications of stress adaptation and its consequences for food safety. It covers the basic science, kinetics, mechanisms, assessment, and control of stress adaptation and its impact on the safety of foods produced by minimal processing or non-thermal technologies. World renowned experts in the field provide detailed accounts of problems associated with stress adaptation and suggest methods for overcoming these problems. The book begins with an introduction to the stress adaptation phenomenon and its implications for the safety of food processed by novel technologies. Then it addresses the responses of pathogens to physical and chemical stresses encountered during food processing, such as heat, pressure, dehydration, radiation, added organic acids, and naturally occurring antimicrobials. The adaptation of food microbiota to stress as a survival strategy is covered next, followed by an examination of the broad spectrum of stresses that may increase a pathogen's tenacity and resistance to processing. Other topics include stress adaptation of beneficial lactic acid bacteria and how resistance or adaptation to stress in the processing environment relates to pathogens' ability to cause disease. Finally, the book presents strategies to overcome stress adaptation in foodborne pathogens. The authors suggest practical control measures and emphasize the need for future research to counteract the stress adaptation phenomenon. Microbial Stress Adaptation and Food Safety proposes practical solutions to microbial stress adaptation and its hazardous effects on food safety and human health.

Viruses vs. Superbugs: A Solution to the Antibioti

Viruses vs. Superbugs: A Solution to the Antibiotics Crisis?

Product Details
* Hardcover: 256 pages
* Publisher: Macmillan; 1 edition (May 11, 2006)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 1403987645

Book Once upon a time, before penicillin, medicine's perpetual battle with bacterial infection was waged with biological weapons. Phages--viruses that kill bacteria but are harmless to humans--were used to perform duties for which they seemed uniquely destined. The story of bacteriophage therapy, which began in the early twentieth century, is dramatic and frustrating. The drama lies in Swedish science editor Hausler's account of how the ideas of an arrogant rogue scientist, Felix d'Herelle, flew in the faces of his contemporaries and how he persevered to prove his hypotheses, only to see his discovery put on a back burner, at least in the West, when modern antibiotics burst upon the scene. That development would have been fine if it had meant a conclusion to struggle against the likes of strep and staph infections. The problem is, however, that greater and greater numbers of serious bacteria are becoming antibiotic resistant. With nearly 90,000 Americans dying each year because antibiotic treatments are no longer effective, something must be done. Hausler proposes renewed investigation into bacteriophage therapy but paints a dismal picture of its likelihood. It is, he says, effective and organic but unlikely to become a cash cow for pharmaceutical companies.

Product Details
* Hardcover: 466 pages
* Publisher: CRC; 1 edition (December 21, 2000)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 9058230937

Book Description
Biofilms affect the lives of all of us, growing as they do for example on our teeth (as plaque), on catheters and medical implants in our bodies, on our boats and ships, in food processing environments, and in drinking and industrial water treatment systems. They are highly complex biological communities whose detailed structure and functioning is only gradually being unravelled, with the development of increasingly sophisticated technology for their study. Biofilms almost always have a negative impact on human affairs (flocs in sewage treatment plants are a major exception) and a lot of research is being carried out to gain a better understanding of them, so that we will be in a better position to control them. This volume, with contributions by international experts from widely diverse areas of this field, presents a state-of-the-art picture of where we are at present in terms of our knowledge of biofilms, the techniques being used to study them, and possible strategies for controlling their growth more successfully. It should provide a valuable reference source for information on biofilms and their control for many years to come.

Medical Management of Infectious Disease

Medical Management of Infectious Disease (Clinical Guides to Medical Management)
by Christopher Grace (Editor)

Product Details
* Hardcover: 896 pages
* Publisher: Informa Healthcare; 1 edition (February 4, 2003)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0824708504

Book Description
This book was written "for those providing primary care," including subspecialists, and it deals with infections "encountered in the outpatient setting" in adults. The editor has selected a niche for the book and has thereby avoided the question of whether there is a need for another textbook of infectious diseases, given the current availability of several excellent textbooks in this discipline. With the current emphasis on treating as many patients as possible on an outpatient basis, the arrival of a textbook that deals with infectious diseases in an ambulatory setting is indeed timely. I expected that the book would emphasize common infections managed in an outpatient setting and that it would provide clear guidelines for deciding when patients require hospitalization. For the most part, the book accomplishes these goals. The book is divided into four sections: an introductory section consisting of nine chapters, a second section that deals with clinical syndromes, a third section that addresses infections in special hosts, and a final section, consisting of three chapters, on health maintenance (including postexposure prophylaxis, adult immunization, and combating bioterrorism). The excellent blend of history and basic science in the chapter entitled "Fever" makes the book a worthwhile purchase. The chapter entitled "Infections of the Oral Cavity" is especially well written. This area is often not covered well in reference books about infectious diseases, even though oral infections and lesions are frequent reasons for referral for outpatient infectious-disease consultations. One topic in which there are substantial variations in practice is the decision whether to admit patients with community-acquired pneumonia to the hospital. The chapter on community-acquired pneumonia deals with this question rather superficially and indicates that the pneumonia-severity score (with a few exceptions) should be used to guide the decision. However, this score was developed as a predictor of mortality, and most investigators now believe that it is unsuitable as a guide to decisions about admission. Each chapter has one or more tables that refer to points made in the text. It is unfortunate that the choice of dark shading to highlight these sections makes them hard to read. Omissions and overlaps in subject matter are minor. There is some overlap between the chapter on blood cultures and the one entitled "The Clinician and the Microbiology Laboratory." In the chapter entitled "Infections in the Patient with Animal Contact," the author does not mention that cats can be a reservoir for Q fever. Infections resulting from fish bites or the handling of fish receive very little attention, with the exception of the observation that Vibrio carchariae has been recovered from patients who have been bitten by sharks. In conclusion, this book will be useful to a variety of clinicians who deal with infectious diseases in an ambulatory setting. The infectious-disease consultant will find sections of the book helpful but will still require traditional reference textbooks in this specialty.

Book Description
Inspired by the pace of change in the taxonomy of the aerobic endospore-forming bacteria, the "Bacillus 2000" symposium on which this book is based was held in Bruges, Belgium, in August 2000, and was supported by the Federation of European Microbiological Societies, the Belgian Society for Microbiology, and several commercial sponsors. Bringing taxonomists interested in Bacillus and its relatives together with people who work with these organisms in medicine, agriculture, and industry, allowed those attending to appreciate the overlaps and interactions of their areas of expertise, in the absence of any comprehensive treatment of the current systematics of the group.
The meeting was a great success, and has resulted in the production of these proceedings, Applications and Systematics of Bacillus and Relatives, providing an up-to-date and comprehensive treatise on the classification, identification and applications of the aerobic endospore-forming bacteria; it is an essential reference for all microbiologists interested in these organisms.

Innate Immunity of Plants, Animals and Humans

Innate Immunity of Plants, Animals and Humans (Nucleic Acids and Molecular Biology) (Nucleic Acids and Molecular Biology)
by Holger Heine (Editor)

Product Details
* Hardcover: 242 pages
* Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (December 18, 2007)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 3540739297

Book Description
All living organisms are in a constant battle against their environment. Since uncontained microorganisms would simply overgrow all higher animals, the evolution of multicellular organisms required adequate and efficient defense mechanisms to protect their own integrity and to ensure their own survival. These defense mechanisms, encompassing receptor proteins that sense the presence of pathogens and effector molecules that are involved in controlling them, are the elemental parts of the innate immune system.
For many species, the innate immune system is the sole active defense system. Long thought to be an unspecific immune response, the discovery of the Toll-like receptors and their ligands finally revealed just how specific the innate immune response actually is.
This book wants to give an overview of our current knowledge about the innate immune system of plants, animals and humans. It not only covers the innate immune mechanisms and responses of so diverse organisms such as plants, Cnidaria, Drosophila, urochordates and zebrafish, but also the major receptor systems in mammalians and humans as well as the central defense mechanisms, antimicrobial peptides and the complement system.
