Adenoviruses: Basic Biology to Gene Therapy

Adenoviruses: Basic Biology to Gene Therapy (Medical Intelligence Unit 15)
by Prem Seth (Editor)

Product Details:
* Hardcover: 314 pages
* Publisher: Landes Bioscience (September 15, 1999)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 1570595844

Book Description:
Ever since their discovery, adenoviruses have proven to be tremendous asset to biologists. Through the study of the adenoviruses the authors have learned not only about the virus structures, mechanisms of viral replication, but also about eukaryotic gene expression, alternative splicing, regulation of cell cycle progression, and apoptosis. In the last five years, there has been an explosion in the use of adenoviruses as vectors for gene transfer to a variety of mammalian cells. Adenoviral vectors are also being tested in Phase I clinical trials for cystic fibrosis and for many kinds of cancers. These recent developments in utilizing adenoviral vectors for gene therapy have rejuvenate an interest in the basic science of adenovirus research. More importantly, it has generated a necessity for a single volume that covers both the biology of adenoviruses as well as our progress in the use of adenoviruses as vectors for gene therapy. This book was written precisely to fulfill such a need.

AIDS, Rhetoric, and Medical Knowledge

AIDS, Rhetoric, and Medical Knowledge
by Alex Preda (Author)

Product Details:
* Hardcover: 288 pages
* Publisher: Cambridge University Press (November 29, 2004)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0521837707

Book Description
Examining the formation of scientific knowledge about the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s, Alex Preda highlights the metaphors, narratives, and classifications which framed scientific hypotheses about the nature of the infectious agent and its transmission. Preda compares these arguments with those used in the scientific analysis of SARS. He demonstrates how scientific knowledge about epidemics is shaped by cultural narratives and categories of social thought through a detailed review of biomedical publications.

Adenovirus Methods and Protocols

Adenovirus Methods and Protocols (Methods in Molecular Medicine)
by William S. M. Wold (Editor)

Product Details:
* Hardcover: 352 pages
* Publisher: Humana Press; 1 edition (January 15, 1999)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0896035514

Book Description
A cutting-edge collection of readily reproducible methods for conducting research with adenoviruses, the premier and most widely used model in cell and molecular biology. The methods range from how to grow and titer adenoviruses and how to construct specific alterations in the adenovirus genome, to how to measure apoptosis induced by cells of the immune system, cytokines, and intrinsic apoptosis effectors. In addition, there are methods to study transcription and splicing with in vitro systems and for the adenovirus-mediated transformation of cells to a malignant state. Each method is written by a prominent investigator well-versed in the technique and includes a brief background discussion and tried, as well as true step-by-step instructions.
