Book Description
Allergic diseases affect nearly one-fourth of the population and cause or contribute to significant chronic illness. Allergic diseases are common and are seen by a wide variety of health care providers. In Clinical Allergy: Diagnosis and Management, the author provides a practical clinical overview for the common disorders encountered in the specialty of Allergy. Designed to be easily readable and to provide clinically applicable information for both the nonallergist and allergist, the intent is to unravel the mystery of allergy. The introductory chapters focus on the human immune response, environmental allergens, and the different types of allergy testing. The subsequent chapters focus on the common allergic conditions seen in the office or clinic, including rhinitis and rhinosinusitis, allergic eye disease, asthma, urticaria and angioedema, atopic and contact dermatitis, drug allergy, food allergy, anaphylaxis, and stinging insect allergy. "Cross-talk" between chapters helps show the interrelationships among the various allergic disorders. The chapters begin with a review of pathophysiologic mechanisms and then consider a clinically structured approach to diagnosis and management of the disorders. In addition to pharmacologic treatment, the importance of nonpharmacologic management and patient education is emphasized. At the end of each chapter, clinical vignettes highlight the daily management of the allergic patient. Clinical Allergy: Diagnosis and Management, provides a logical framework for the evaluation and management of allergic disorders in patients.

Myasthenia Gravis and Related Disorders

Myasthenia Gravis and Related Disorders (Current Clinical Neurology)
by: Henry J. Kaminski

Product Details
* Hardcover: 312 pages
* Publisher: Humana Press; 2nd ed. edition (November 26, 2008)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 1588298523

Book Description
Advances in the study and understanding of myasthenia gravis have led to the need for the publication of this important new edition. The goal of Myasthenia Gravis and Related Disorders, Second Edition is identical to the first -- to provide the clinician and the scientist with a common resource for understanding this complex disorder. This new edition begins with discussions of neuromuscular junction structure and function and follows with updated chapters covering a wide range of topics, such as the acetylcholine receptor, clinical presentation, diagnostic evaluation, and treatment. Importantly, new supplemental chapters have been added; these discuss rigorous clinical assessments of patients for research trials and the epidemiology and genetics of myasthenia gravis. The discussion of the most challenging aspects of myasthenia gravis, its impact on patients’ psychological make-up, has been expanded as well. Myasthenia Gravis and Related Disorders, Second Edition retains the “personal approach” of the authors regarding treatment and is a valuable resource for meeting the many and varied needs of patients with myasthenia gravis.

The Biology and Pathology of Innate Immunity Mechanisms

The Biology and Pathology of Innate Immunity Mechanisms (ADVANCES IN EXPERIMENTAL MEDICINE AND BIOLOGY Volume 479)
by Yona Keisari (Editor), Itzhak Ofek (Editor)

Product Details
* Hardcover: 338 pages
* Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (June 30, 2000)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0306464098

Book Description
This book is the proceedings of the Bathsheva de Rothschild Seminar on Innate Immunity, held on October 10--15, 1999, in Zichron Yaakov, Israel. In recent years, scientific attention has focused increasingly on immediate defense mechanisms based on non-clonal recognition of microbial components. These mechanisms constitute the innate immunity arm of the body's defense. Identification of pathogens by these mechanisms primarily involves receptors recognizing sugar moieties of various microorganisms. This major new volume describes the recent discoveries in this field, including the implications of the recognition of specific components of the innate immunity arsenal as the main cause of host susceptibility to particular types of infections, and the development of new agents to combat infections using newly identified anti-microbial peptides. There is also coverage of the major themes, such as (i) the role of innate immune responses as a first-line defense against microbial infection and tumor cells; (ii) the cellular and molecular basis of the function of cells and molecules involved in innate immunity; (iii) the role of innate immunity in the immunocompromised host; and (iv) the interactions between innate immunity components and clonal immune response.

Handbook of Sample Preparation for Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-Ray Microanalysis

Handbook of Sample Preparation for Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-Ray Microanalysis
by Patrick Echlin (Author)

Product Details
* Hardcover: 200 pages
* Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (March 6, 2009)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0387857303

Book Description
This Handbook is a complete guide to preparing a wide variety of specimens for the scanning electron microscope and x-ray microanalyzer. Specimens range from inorganic, organic, biological, and geological samples to materials such as metals, polymers, and semiconductors which can exist as solids, liquids, and gases. While the Handbook complements the best-selling textbook, Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-Ray Microanalysis, Third Edition, by Goldstein, et al., it is entirely self-contained and describes what is needed up to the point the sample is put into the instrument. Photomicrographs of each specimen complement the many sample preparation “recipes”. Additional chapters describe the general features of specimen preparation in relation to the different needs of scanning electron microscopes and x-ray microanalyzers, and an appendix covers chemicals and equipment applicable to any of the recipes. This authoritative yet practical Handbook is an essential reference for anyone who uses these instruments, and assumes only an elementary knowledge of preparation techniques to guide the reader through the specific protocols.

* Paperback: 244 pages
* Publisher: National Academies Press; illustrated edition edition (August 8, 2003)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0309086116

Book Description
Johne's Disease is a chronic, progressive intestinal disease caused by infection with Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (Map) that affects primarily ruminant animals. In recent decades there has been growing concern over the lack of effective control of this disease and questions have arisen regarding the possibility that Map infection could be a cause of some cases of Crohn's disease in humans. This report presents a broad outline of the steps that should be taken to control Johne's disease, reduce the spread of Map, and minimize effects of the disease in animals. The report also describes the weaknesses of our current research agenda and provides recommendations for a new research strategy to resolve the question of whether there is a link between Johne's and Crohn's diseases.
