Book Description
Malaria is still a major global health problem, killing more than 1 million people every year. Almost all of these deaths are caused by Plasmodium falciparum, one of the four species of malaria parasites infecting humans. This high burden of mortality falls heavily on Sub-Saharan Africa, where over 90% of these deaths are thought to occur, and 5% of children die before the age of 5 years. The death toll from malaria is still growing, with malaria-specific mortality in young African children estimated to have doubled during the last twenty years. This increase has been associated with drug resistance of the parasite, spread of insecticide resistant mosquitoes, poverty, social and political upheaval, and lack of effective vaccines. This collection of reviews addresses many of these important issues of malarial immunity and immunopathology. They are of interest not only to malariologists, but hopefully also to the broader immunological community. Strong interactions with, and feedback from immunologists working in other infectious diseases and in basic immunology will help us to move the field of malaria immunology and therapeutic intervention forward more quickly.

The Biology and Pathology of Innate Immunity Mechanisms

The Biology and Pathology of Innate Immunity Mechanisms (ADVANCES IN EXPERIMENTAL MEDICINE AND BIOLOGY Volume 479)
by Yona Keisari (Editor), Itzhak Ofek (Editor)

Product Details:
* Hardcover: 338 pages
* Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (June 1, 2000)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0306464098

Book Description
This book is the proceedings of the Bathsheva de Rothschild Seminar on Innate Immunity, held on October 10-15, 1999, in Zichron Yaakov, Israel. In recent years, scientific attention has focused increasingly on immediate defense mechanisms based on non-clonal recognition of microbial components. These mechanisms constitute the innate immunity arm of the body's defense. Identification of pathogens by these mechanisms primarily involves receptors recognizing sugar moieties of various microorganisms. This major new volume describes the recent discoveries in this field, including the implications of the recognition of specific components of the innate immunity arsenal as the main cause of host susceptibility to particular types of infections, and the development of new agents to combat infections using newly identified anti-microbial peptides. There is also coverage of the major themes, such as (i) the role of innate immune responses as a first-line defense against microbial infection and tumor cells; (ii) the cellular and molecular basis of the function of cells and molecules involved in innate immunity; (iii) the role of innate immunity in the immunocompromised host; and (iv) the interactions between innate immunity components and clonal immune response.

Acute and Chronic Cough

Acute and Chronic Cough (Lung Biology in Health and Disease)
by Anthony E. Redington (Editor), Alyn H. Morice (Editor)

Product Details:
* Hardcover: 464 pages
* Publisher: Informa Healthcare (July 13, 2005)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0824759583

Book Description:
A comprehensive review of the scientific and clinical aspects of acute and chronic cough, this reference focuses on recent developments in our understanding of the molecular biology of putative cough receptors, the neural mechanisms involved in the afferent and efferent limbs, the central processing of the cough reflex, and peptides and other substances that may mediate or modulate the cough reflex. With chapters wriitenby acknowledged authorities in the field, this handbook covers current and potential therapeutic agents, various methodologies to measure cough reflex sensitivity, and clinical approaches for the assessment of chronic cough in adults and children.
