Book Description
The conceptual basis for molecular mimicry was first defined in the early 1980s when monoclonal antibodies against viruses were also shown to react with non-viral host protein; in this case, measles virus phosphoprotein cross-reacted with host cell cytokeratin, herpes simplex virus type 1 with host-cell vimentin and vaccinia virus with host-cell intermediate filaments. Following this discovery, others emerged, again at the clonal level, that T cell clones against proteins from a variety of infectious agents also reacted with host antigenic determinants. The clonal distinction was imperative for the initial definition of mimicry. At least 30 years prior to our initial description of molecular mimicry involving cross-reactions between numerous microbes, on the polyclonal antibody level, streptococcus was believed to react with renal glomeruli, heart and basal ganglia to account for the glomerulonephritis, heart and valvular disease and chorea, respectively. However, subsequent research showed that the nephritis was caused by immune complex deposits and the tissue damage they produced. Later, in 1990, the cross-reactivity of streptococcal antigen with myocardial antigens on a clonal level was uncovered. Hence, for both historical reasons and mechanistic understanding, it is best to provide evidence for cross-reactivity at the clonal level to prove that molecular mimicry exists.

Wine Microbiology: Practical Applications and Procedures
Wine Microbiology: Practical Applications and Procedures
by Kenneth C. Fugelsang (Author), Charles G. Edwards (Author)
Product Details:
* Hardcover: 396 pages
* Publisher: Springer; 2 edition (November 14, 2006)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 038733341X
Book Description
Since publication of the first edition of Wine Microbiology in 1997, the volume of new information and concepts has dramatically increased. Even with the tremendous increase in available information, a comprehensive understanding regarding the role of individual microorganisms towards wine quality as well as the impact of complicated interactions between microorganisms and processing techniques is lacking.
Wine Microbiology, Second Edition, fills this void. Like the first edition, the book addresses real world problems such as characterization and enumeration of yeast, bacteria and molds common to juice and wine environments and their impact on wine quality and stability. In addition, the potential of solving processing problems through rapid, real-time molecular methods and new applications for using starter cultures of non-Saccharomyces yeast are discussed. The book is a great resource for professionals and students in the field of enology and viticulture.

RNA Viruses: A Practical Approach
RNA Viruses: A Practical Approach
by Alan J. Cann (Editor)
Product Details:
* Paperback: 266 pages
* Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA; 1st edition (May 15, 2000)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0199637164
Book Description
RNA Viruses: A Practical Approach is wide ranging in scope, from emerging technology such as reverse genetics and retrovirus vectors, to money saving tips - how to make your own silica particles for high efficiency RNA extraction and liposomes for cell transfection! Chapter One covers the fundamentals of investigating RNA virus genome structure at a molecular level. Chapters Two and Three describe techniques for mutagenesis of RNA genomes and analysis of transcription. Chapter Four deals with RNA virus-encoded proteinases, an important aspect of the control of RNA virus gene expression. Chapter Five considers retrovirus oncogenesis and Chapter Six analysis of RNA virus quasispecies. Chapter Seven describes systems for investigation of in vitro replication of positive-stranded viruses and chapter eight the packaging of RNA virus genomes. In addition to the technical aspects of reverse genetics and retrovirus vectors, both of the final two chapters also consider ethical aspects of these new technologies.
