The Hidden Epidemic: Confronting Sexually Transmitted Diseases

The Hidden Epidemic: Confronting Sexually Transmitted Diseases
By Committee on Prevention and Control of Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Institute of Medicine

Product Details
* Hardcover: 448 pages
* Publisher: National Academies Press; 1 edition (April 11, 1997)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0309054958

Book Description
The United States has the dubious distinction of leading the industrialized world in overall rates of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), with 12 million new cases annually. About 3 million teenagers contract an STD each year, and many will have long-term health problems as a result. Women and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to these diseases and their health consequences. In addition, STDs increase the risk of HIV transmission.
The Hidden Epidemic examines the scope of sexually transmitted infections in the United States and provides a critical assessment of the nation's response to this public health crisis. The book identifies the components of an effective national STD prevention and control strategy and provides direction for an appropriate response to the epidemic. Recommendations for improving public awareness and education, reaching women and adolescents, integrating public health programs, training health care professionals, modifying messages from the mass media, and supporting future research are included.
The book documents the epidemiological dimensions and the economic and social costs of STDs, describing them as "a secret epidemic" with tremendous consequences. The committee frankly discusses the confusing and often hypocritical nature of how Americans deal with issues regarding sexuality--the conflicting messages conveyed in the mass media, the reluctance to promote condom use, the controversy over sex education for teenagers, and the issue of personal blame.
The Hidden Epidemic identifies key elements of effective, culturally appropriate programs to promote healthy behavior by adolescents and adults. It examines the problem of fragmentation in STD services and provides examples of communities that have formed partnerships between stakeholders to develop integrated approaches.
The committee's recommendations provide a practical foundation on which to build an integrated national program to help young people and adults develop habits of healthy sexuality.
The Hidden Epidemic was written for both health care professionals and people without a medical background and will be indispensable to anyone concerned about preventing and controlling STDs.

Product Details
* Hardcover: 190 pages
* Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (February 27, 2009)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 8847008255

Book Description
Avian Influenza (AI) and Newcastle Disease (ND) are two devastating diseases of poultry, which cause losses to the poultry industry and influence the liveability of rural communities worldwide. Following the H5N1 epidemic they appear to be endemic at least in Asia, Eastern Europe, The Middle East and Africa. Particularly in case of AI outbreaks it is essential that infection is diagnosed promptly and that isolates are made available to the international scientific community.
Currently, several organisations including OIE, FAO and the EC have organised training courses in affected areas. However, often these courses do not cover all aspects of AI/ND diagnosis but only certain aspects. This results in fragmented areas of knowledge and in the application of different diagnostic protocols in different parts of the world.
The objective of this book is to provide a comprehensive approach to AI diagnosis ranging from the clinical elements that should trigger a suspicion in the field, to the post mortem technique, collection of samples, processing/ shipment of specimens, virological, serological and molecular diagnosis and guidelines for notification.

Viral proteases and Antiviral Protease Inhibitor Therapy: Proteases in Biology and Disease
by: Uwe Lendeckel, Nigel M. Hooper

Product Details
* Hardcover: 370 pages
* Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (August 1, 2009)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 904812347X

Book Description
The 8th volume in the Proteases in Biology and Disease series focuses on the role of proteases in virus function and their potential as anti-viral targets. Viral infections are still difficult to threat and some remained life-threatening diseases in spite of antiviral drug research over decades. Proteases are still regarded as an achilles’ heel of the pathogens and, thus, protease inhibitors may help to handle the known and the emerging viral threads.
The book discusses viral proteases of the most important pathogenic viruses, responsible for severe diseases:
* AIDS
* SARS
* Hepatitis
* Cytomegalovirus
* T-cell lymphotropic virus
* Picornavirus
This book focuses specifically on the viral proteases, crucial prerequisites for viral entry into cells and viral replication. Viral proteases represent an important pharmaceutical target. The current stage of protease inhibitor development and therapy are summarised and discussed by experts in the field. This volume represents a timely and valuable continuation of the Proteases in Biology and Disease series. The reader will learn the potential for proteases as targets for effective anti-virals. This book will be a valuable source of information on viral proteases and provoke further research in this important field.

Book Description
Although the earliest accounts of diphtheria date back at least 2,000 years, this disease was first associated with major epidemics in Europe during the 16th century. By the 18th century, diphtheria became a major cause of childhood illness and death in the New World. With the advent of widespread vaccination in the 1920s, the number of cases and deaths dropped dramatically. However, in areas where vaccination rates drop, diphtheria can rapidly become reestablished, as seen in the late 1990s in several former Soviet republics. Diphtheria is a bacterial infection caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae, which attacks the respiratory system. "Diphtheria" describes the disease, the bacteria that causes it, and the development of effective treatments. Chapters of this title include: History of Diphtheria; How Does Corynebacterium Diphtheriae Cause Disease; How Is Diphtheria Treated; How Is Diphtheria Prevented; Resurgence of Diphtheria in the Former Soviet Union; and, Uses of Diphtheria Toxin.

Product Details
* Hardcover: 912 pages
* Publisher: ASM Press; 10 edition (May 2007)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0340885688

Book Description
Parasitic infections present a major challenge to the health and well being of several billions of people across the world. Political unrest, natural disasters, the migrations of huge populations and the spread of HIV infections have added to already serious problems by increasing global parasite burdens. Increasingly it is becoming clear that interactions between parasites and other infectious agents can aggravate disease. Against this backdrop, progress is being made in the containment of many parasitic infections and there is optimism that some of the diseases that have plagued humans for centuries may be eradicated. Hopes for the future revolve around the application of modern molecular, genetic and immunological science, linked to the systematic use of evidence-based control methods. All these themes and more run through the chapters in this volume. Parasitology has been thoroughly revised and updated for the tenth edition of Topley & Wilson's Microbiology and Microbial Infections to include all newly identified parasites and emerging diseases. Through discussion of the general aspects of parasitology and detailed reviews of specific organisms (grouped under protozoa and helminths) the volume provides an authoritative survey of current knowledge of parasitic organisms and the human diseases to which they give rise, what their effects are and ways in which they can be controlled, not only now, but also in the future. The comprehensive coverage includes the basic science that underlies disease transmission and progression, the classification and identification of the organisms concerned, and the epidemiology and treatment of the diseases caused. Product Details
* Hardcover: 338 pages
* Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (June 30, 2000)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0306464098

Book Description
This book is the proceedings of the Bathsheva de Rothschild Seminar on Innate Immunity, held on October 10--15, 1999, in Zichron Yaakov, Israel. In recent years, scientific attention has focused increasingly on immediate defense mechanisms based on non-clonal recognition of microbial components. These mechanisms constitute the innate immunity arm of the body's defense. Identification of pathogens by these mechanisms primarily involves receptors recognizing sugar moieties of various microorganisms. This major new volume describes the recent discoveries in this field, including the implications of the recognition of specific components of the innate immunity arsenal as the main cause of host susceptibility to particular types of infections, and the development of new agents to combat infections using newly identified anti-microbial peptides. There is also coverage of the major themes, such as (i) the role of innate immune responses as a first-line defense against microbial infection and tumor cells; (ii) the cellular and molecular basis of the function of cells and molecules involved in innate immunity; (iii) the role of innate immunity in the immunocompromised host; and (iv) the interactions between innate immunity components and clonal immune response.

* Paperback: 260 pages

* Language: English

Book Description
As America celebrates the 225th Anniversary of the greatest democracy in the world, author Boyd E. Graves, J.D. exposes the shocking evidence of a century long national obsession with ethnic genocide. Rationalized by the economics of population policy, legalized by Congress, and fueled by pharmacuetical propoganda, Dr. Graves outlines how the AIDS pandemic was manufactured and proliferated by government contracted laboratories.
Author Boyd Ed Graves has spent the last ten years tracking the origins of AIDS through a densely-covered propaganda trail of the highest deception. Dr. Graves' work offers the world a look behind the AIDS curtain, and offers our generation the first real opportunity to close the darkest chapter in human history.
As evidence, Dr. Graves provides the irrefutable “missing link,” the AIDS research logic Flow Chart. It is the linkage of over 20,000 scientific papers which conclusively prove a “candidate” virus was developed and mass produced. The “creation”, “production” and “proliferation” of AIDS is the ultimate assault on a social fabric woven in democracy. Here, Boyd Ed Graves shares some of the court documents and correspondence in response to the world’s most deadly ethnic cleansing experiment.
His 1999 Flow Chart discovery has been authenticated by medical and scientific doctors around the world. The critical insights now being unlocked by the thirty year old secret U.S. AIDS Flow Chart, have firmly established the genocide blue print as “the greatest document find of the century.”
The shocking conclusions of Dr. Graves’ research has resulted in the landmark case seeking Global AIDS Apology. Boyd E. Graves vs. The President of the United States, et al. United States Supreme Court Case No. 00-9587. “State Origin: The Evidence of the Laboratory Birth of AIDS” should be required reading for the world to ensure we establish a firm foundation, to never again allow the greatest democracy in the history of the world another opportunity to masquerade.
The AIDS holocaust has an activist, it is Boyd Ed Graves and this is his story.

* Publisher: Blackwell Publishing Professional; 2nd edition (January 15, 1999)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0865425434

Book Description
The most recent revision of this comprehensive text covers the bacterial, fungal, and viral pathogenic agents that are significant causes of animal disease. The focus includes pathogenic mechanisms and processes in infectious diseases; methods of diagnosis; and principles of resistance, prevention, and therapy.
In addition to serving as a resource for veterinary students, Veterinary Microbiology, Second Edition also serves as a convenient reference for veterinarians and veterinary scientists whose main line of activity and expertise is outside the areas of microbiology.
Veterinary Microbiology, Second Edition is now organized in four sections according to the most appropriate methods of instruction:
Part I deals with the general characteristics of the host– parasite relationship, laboratory diagnosis of conditions involving an infectious etiology, antimicrobial treatment, and prevention of infectious disease.
Part II (Bacteria and Fungi) and Part III (viruses) present the infectious agents that affect the veterinary species. The chapters dealing with the bacterial agents are grouped mainly by morphology, and their gram-staining characteristics. The fungal agents are grouped mainly by morphologic characteristics (yeast, mold). The viruses are grouped along taxonomic grounds.
Part IV, an enhancement new to this edition, deals with the infectious agents in the context of the host. This section is organized by organ system. Each organ system is discussed first as a microbial habitat, followed by discussion of those infectious agents that mainly affect that particular system.

The ELISA Guidebook: Second Edition

The ELISA Guidebook: Second Edition (Methods in Molecular Biology)
by John R. Crowther (Author)

Product Details
* Hardcover: 568 pages
* Publisher: Humana Press; 2nd edition (December 19, 2008)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 1603272534

Book Description
The Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) continues, as predicted, to be the predominant assay used in biomedical and agricultural research. While little has changed in the principles of the ELISAs used since the publication of The ELISA Guidebook, many technological advantages, including the increasing number of reagents available for exploitation and the larger spectrum of instruments to measure the coloured products of ELISAs, have greatly benefited the field. Other testing technologies using molecular techniques, predominantly the conventional and more and more often, real time PCR, are rapidly evolving to help diagnose and differentiate disease agents and identify substances present in exquisitely small amounts. The ELISA is still needed either alone in mass screening, such as serological assays, or used in tandem with molecular techniques to fully evaluate the molecular and antigenic nature of analytes.
John R. Crowther provides today’s premier practical guide to the understanding and application of ELISA. This Edition enlarges on charting methods for assessing the indirect ELISA, ruggedness and robustness of tests, aspects of kit use and validation, and internal quality control and external quality management of data. The author describes each method in great detail to ensure experimental success and includes advice on equipment choice, maintenance, and calibration. Wherever possible, helpful written explanations are provided along with copious diagrams.
With its numerous worked examples, detailed instructions, and extensive illustrations, The ELISA Guidebook, Second Edition offers a powerful synthesis of all the basic concepts and practical experimental details investigators need to understand, develop, and apply ELISA methodology successfully in day-to-day basic and clinical research.

Book Description
This book is directed towards undergraduates and beginning graduate students in microbiology, food science and chemical engineering. Those studying pharmacy, biochemistry and general biology will find it of interest. The section on waste disposal will be of interest to civil engineering and public health students and practitioners. For the benefit of those students who may be unfamiliar with the basic biological assumptions underlying industrial microbiology, such as students of chemical and civil engineering, elements of biology and microbiology are introduced. The new elements which have necessitated the shift in paradigm in industrial microbiology such as bioinformatics, genomics, proteomics, site-directed mutation, metabolic engineering, the human genome project and others are also introduced and their relevance to industrial microbiology and biotechnology indicated. As many references as space will permit are included. The various applications of industrial microbiology are covered broadly, and the chapters are grouped to reflect these applications. The emphasis throughout, however, is on the physiological, biochemical principles, and where possible, the genomic principles behind these applications.

Product Details
* Paperback: 350 pages
* Publisher: Springer Publishing Company, LLC.; Hardcover edition (September 28, 2007)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0826103162

Book Description
In today's highly emotional HIV/AIDS debates, HIV risk behaviors are often simplistically described as a matter of "human choice," with little attention paid to the complex social, environmental, cultural, and economic factors impacting these choices. It is critically important to understand not only the science of the disease but also the behavioral and sociocultural influences that both facilitate, and prevent the spread of HIV.
This unique teaching kit--a research-based resource for a diverse audience, including academics, students, and health professionals--facilitates this understanding. The book covers the biomedical, social, psychological, and behavioral aspects of AIDS, thus providing a multidisciplinary view of prevention and treatment.
The Complete HIV/AIDS Teaching Kit offers an overview of what science knows about the incidence, prevalence, antecedents, consequences, prevention, and treatment of HIV/AIDS and is organized in four parts:
* HIV/AIDS: The Epidemic
* Preventing AIDS
* Living with HIV/AIDS
* Gender, Culture, and HIV/AIDS
Use the companion volume, Tools for Building Culturally Competent HIV Prevention Programs (Springer Publishing late 2007), to answer all your questions about program structure, effectiveness, goals, recruitment, evaluation, and more.

WHO Guidelines on Tularaemia

WHO Guidelines on Tularaemia
by WHO (Author)

Product Details
* Paperback: 122 pages
* Publisher: World Health Organization (December 2007)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 9241547375

Book Description
Tularaemia is a bacterial zoonotic disease of the northern hemisphere. The bacterium (Francisella tularensis) is highly virulent for humans and a range of animals such as rodents, hares, and rabbits. Humans can infect themselves by direct contact with infected animals, by arthropod bites, by ingestion of contaminated water or food, or by inhalation of infective aerosols. There is no human-to-human transmission. In addition to its natural occurrence F. tularensis evokes great concern as a potential bioterrorism agent. F. tularensis subspecies tularensis is one of the most infectious pathogens known in human medicine.
In order to avoid laboratory-associated infection, safety measures are needed and consequently, clinical laboratories do not generally accept specimens for culture. However, since clinical management of cases depends on early recognition, there is an urgent need for diagnostic services.
This first edition of WHO Guidelines on tularaemia provides background information on the disease, describes the current best practices for its diagnosis and treatments in humans, suggests measures to be taken in case of epidemics and provides guidance on how to handle F. tularensis in the laboratory.
The target audience includes clinicians, laboratory personnel, public health workers, veterinarians, and any other person with an interest in zoonoses.

* Hardcover: 162 pages
* Publisher: Royal Society of Chemistry; 1 edition (November 9, 2001)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 085404840

Book Description
Cryptosporidium, in its various forms, is a widely recognized cause of outbreaks of waterborne disease. Regulatory bodies worldwide are increasingly requiring the development of "fit-for-purpose" detection methods for this protozoan parasite, but analysis is often problematic. Bringing together international academic and industry-based experts, this book provides a comprehensive review of the current state of analytical techniques for the detection of cryptosporidium, as well as looking at likely future developments. In particular, the issues of species identification and oocyst viability are addressed. Quality assurance issues and potential problems associated with the new cryptosporidium regulations are also highlighted. The extent of the perceived problems and the regulatory backdrop against which the analysis must be carried out are also discussed. Scientists in the water industry, environmental testing laboratories, researchers, consultants, environmental health professionals, food manufacturers and regulatory or environmental bodies are among the many who should read this book. In addition, anyone with an interest in microbiological challenges and problem-solving will welcome the coverage.
